Geophagus surinamensis
20 available from this listing.
The Geophagus surinamensis, commonly known as the Red Stripe Eartheater, is a fascinating South American cichlid admired for its attractive colours, peaceful nature and unique feeding behaviour. The name “Geophagus” means “earth eater”, referring to its habit of sifting mouthfuls of sand through its gills in search of food. As they mature, these impressive fish can develop beautiful iridescent blue-green markings, warm red and orange tones, and an attractive red/orange head and dorsal area. Their constant exploration of the substrate makes them an entertaining and interesting addition to a suitably sized aquarium. Generally peaceful for a cichlid, Geophagus are best kept in groups and benefit from a spacious aquarium with a soft sand substrate. They are ideal for aquarists looking for a large, active and characterful South American cichlid.
